Exclusive Breast Feeding for First Six Months: Importance

The World Health Organization recommends that breastfeeding is initiated within the first hour of birth. Breastfeeding is then to be continued exclusively for the first 6 months of life which means that no other food or fluids is provided to the infant. Our grandmothers knew the importance of breastfeeding and this is the best thing for both mothers and the infants. Breast milk provides complete nutrition for the optimum growth of the infant. The first breast milk which is called colostrum even provides immunity for the baby. This improves overall health long term and decreases risk of infections. Breast fed babies also have better cognitive development.

Other Benefits of Breastfeeding:

1.     Hygienic ; this will likely result in less digestive issues for the baby

2.     Economical; less burden in terms of finances on the family

3.     Bonding experience for the mother and infant

4.     Reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer for the mother

There are signs to look for that ensure the baby has an adequate supply of breast milk. These signs include a regular feeding schedule, softer breasts of the mother after a feed, frequent urination (wet diapers) and steady weight gain by the infant.

Many mothers face challenges in the early stages of breastfeeding. This is a new skill for both the mother and the baby. Breastfeeding takes time and patience and one should take guidance from elders and doctors.

In some cultures, babies are fed with water, sugar and herbal medicines before initiation of breastfeeding. This can be dangerous as it interferes with initiation of breastfeeding and the water may not be hygienic. If, due to a medical issue, breastfeeding cannot be initiated immediately, the baby should be fed with a spoon instead of a bottle so as to not interfere with breastfeeding down the line.

As outlined above, it is recommended that breastfeeding is the preferred nutrition for a new-born and every mother should opt for this if possible.
